Dental implant in Montreal: complete guide, cost and timeline

Everything you need to know before getting started, by Dr. Saul Barchichat.

By Dr. Saul Barchichat

A dental implant is today the closest tooth replacement to a real tooth. Unlike a bridge or removable denture, it integrates directly into the jawbone and provides unmatched stability, comfort and aesthetics. Here is what I systematically explain to my patients at the Plateau Mont-Royal before starting implant treatment.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw (or zirconia for patients with metal sensitivity) surgically inserted into the alveolar bone to replace the root of a missing tooth. An abutment and a custom crown are then attached to the implant. The result is indistinguishable from a natural tooth both visually and functionally.

  • Lifespan: 15 to 25 years with proper care
  • Material: grade IV titanium or zirconia (metal-free option)
  • Success rate: 95 to 98% according to clinical studies
  • Preserves jawbone unlike a bridge

Who can receive a dental implant?

Most healthy adults are good candidates. However, some factors may require prior preparation: smoking (slows healing), uncontrolled diabetes, bisphosphonate therapy (osteoporosis treatment) or significant bone loss. In the last case, a bone graft may be needed before implant placement.

  • Adults with good general health
  • Completed bone growth (generally 18 years old)
  • Satisfactory oral hygiene
  • Diabetic or smoking patients can be treated with precautions

Treatment steps: how long does it take?

Implant treatment takes place in several phases. Generally count 3 to 6 months from start to placement of the final crown.

  • Consultation and assessment (panoramic, cone beam if needed): 1 visit
  • Extraction of remaining tooth if necessary: 1 visit
  • Surgical placement of the implant: 1 visit (under local anesthesia)
  • Bone healing (osseointegration): 2 to 4 months
  • Abutment placement and impression: 1 visit
  • Final crown placement: 1 visit

Cost of a dental implant in Montreal

The total cost of a dental implant in Montreal generally ranges from $2,500 to $4,500 per tooth, including surgery, abutment and crown. This amount may be higher if a bone graft is needed. Although more expensive upfront than a bridge, an implant is often more economical over 20 years as it does not require replacing adjacent teeth.

  • Implant + crown: $2,500 to $4,500 per tooth
  • Bone graft if needed: $500 to $1,500 additional
  • Some insurance plans cover 50% of prosthetic care
  • CDCP may cover a portion for eligible patients

Implant vs bridge: which to choose?

A bridge is faster and generally less expensive upfront, but it requires shaping healthy adjacent teeth and does not preserve bone. An implant preserves the integrity of neighboring teeth, maintains bone volume and offers a far superior lifespan. For a healthy patient, an implant is almost always the best long-term solution.

Frequently asked questions

Is the procedure painful?

Implant placement is done under local anesthesia. During the procedure, you should feel nothing. In the 48 hours that follow, moderate pain and slight swelling are normal. Common analgesics (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) are generally sufficient to control discomfort.

How long does an implant last?

With good hygiene and regular check-ups, an implant can last 20 to 25 years, or even a lifetime. The porcelain crown may need to be replaced after 15 to 20 years due to normal wear.

Does my insurance cover implants?

Many dental insurance plans cover 50% of prosthetic care up to an annual maximum. Check your policy. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) also provides coverage for certain prosthetic procedures depending on your income.

Can multiple implants be placed simultaneously?

Yes, it is possible to place multiple implants in the same surgery, reducing the number of visits and overall recovery time. We will evaluate your situation at the initial consultation.
