Invisalign or braces: everything to know before choosing

A thorough comparison by Dr. Saul Barchichat to help you make the right choice.

By Dr. Saul Barchichat

The question comes up often in consultations: should I choose Invisalign or traditional braces to straighten my teeth? Both options work well, but each has advantages and limitations depending on your clinical case, lifestyle and budget. Here is my honest answer after years of orthodontic practice on the Plateau Mont-Royal.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners, custom-made from a 3D digital impression of your teeth. Each aligner is worn 20 to 22 hours per day for 1 to 2 weeks, then replaced by the next one. A complete treatment includes between 12 and 40 aligners depending on case complexity.

  • Virtually invisible day-to-day
  • Removable for eating and brushing
  • Comfortable (no wires or brackets)
  • Digital tracking with final result visualization before start

Traditional braces: advantages and limitations

Braces remain the gold standard for complex cases: severe malocclusions, significant rotations, bite problems. They are permanently attached to the teeth and cannot be removed, ensuring continuous orthodontic force 24 hours a day. Ceramic braces offer a better aesthetic than traditional metal braces.

  • Ideal for complex cases
  • No risk of forgetting to wear
  • Metal or ceramic (more discreet option)
  • Require monthly adjustments and rigorous hygiene

Invisalign vs braces: objective comparison

Here are the main criteria to compare based on your personal situation.

  • Aesthetics: Invisalign wins (nearly invisible) vs braces (visible, ceramic as a compromise)
  • Comfort: Invisalign wins (no mucosal irritation) vs braces (possible irritations)
  • Complex case effectiveness: braces win vs Invisalign (limits on significant rotations)
  • Hygiene: Invisalign wins (removable) vs braces (harder to clean around brackets)
  • Price: comparable — expect $4,000 to $8,000 for both options
  • Duration: similar — 12 to 24 months depending on complexity

Which treatment for which case?

Invisalign works very well for mild to moderate misalignment in motivated patients who can commit to wearing the aligners. Braces are preferred for severe cases, younger patients, or those who may not wear aligners long enough. A consultation is essential to determine which option is best suited to your specific dentition.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cost of Invisalign on the Plateau Mont-Royal?

An Invisalign treatment typically costs between $4,500 and $7,500 depending on complexity. This amount includes 3D planning, all aligners and retainer trays at the end of treatment. Some insurance plans cover orthodontics up to a certain maximum.

At what age can orthodontic treatment begin?

Orthodontic treatment can start once permanent teeth are in place, generally around age 11–13. However, adult orthodontics is equally effective — there is no upper age limit. More and more patients aged 30 to 50 are choosing Invisalign.

Is Invisalign treatment painful?

Slight discomfort is possible when changing aligners, usually for 1 to 2 days. This is a normal pressure indicating teeth are moving. This discomfort is generally lower than with traditional braces.

What happens after orthodontic treatment?

A retention phase is essential after any orthodontic treatment to maintain results. We make custom retainer trays to wear at night. Without retention, teeth naturally tend to return to their original position.
